A Lodge Surrounded by Nature
One of the things that makes Gargia Lodge special is its location. The lodge sits quietly in the Gargia Valley, surrounded by forest, mountains, and open landscapes. Here, nature is not something you need to travel to. It is already right outside your door.
Large windows throughout the lodge allow you to take in the scenery, whether it is the soft light of early morning, the colors of the surrounding forest, or the peaceful stillness of evening in the valley.
The atmosphere here is calm and unhurried. It is a place where you can truly disconnect from everyday routines and enjoy the simple comfort of being close to nature.
A Lodge with History
Staying at Gargia Lodge also means becoming part of a long and fascinating history. Gargia has been welcoming travelers for over three centuries, making it one of the historic accommodation points in the region.
The story of Gargia begins in the 18th century, when Finnmark was part of the Danish Kingdom and a land-based postal route was established across the vast wilderness of Finnmarksvidda.
1798 – The First Postal Route
In 1798 the first land-based postal system in Finnmark was established. The route connected Torneå, Karesuando, Lepåpäjärvi, Kautokeino, Gargia, and Alta. Designated postmen and helpers were responsible for delivering mail through extremely harsh weather conditions.
1845 – Mountain Lodges as Shelters
To support the postal workers crossing Finnmarksvidda, several mountain lodges were built along the route. Jotka, Mollisjok, Gargia, and Ravnastua became central resting points along the journey.
The post carriers crossed the plateau in 30-kilometer stages, stopping at these lodges for rest and shelter. Many of these lodges still exist today, including Gargia Lodge.
1950 – Rebuilding After the War
The original Gargia Lodge was rebuilt in the 1950s after World War II. For several decades it remained under state ownership before later becoming a place for travelers and guests.
1970 – A Place for Everyone
Since the 1970s Gargia Lodge has been family run, welcoming guests from around the world who come to experience the beautiful nature at the foot of Finnmarksvidda.
2021 – Gargia Joins Æventyr
In 2021 Gargia Lodge joined the Æventyr family, continuing its long tradition of hospitality while offering warm beds, local cuisine, and unforgettable experiences in Northern Norway.
