Step into the Arctic wilderness on a gentle snowshoe hike starting just outside Gargia Lodge. As we move through the soft snow at a relaxed pace, your local guide will share stories about the surrounding nature, wildlife, and local history. Midway through the hike, we stop to light a bonfire in a sheltered spot, where you'll enjoy a hot drink and taste a local snack — perfect for warming up and soaking in the stillness of the north. No previous snowshoeing experience is needed — just curiosity and a sense of adventure. This is a calm and cozy way to explore the Arctic landscape, and a wonderful choice for families, couples, and anyone looking for something gentle and memorable. The Hike The tour starts with a 30–45 minute drive from Alta to Gargia Lodge, one of Finnmark's most historic mountain lodges. From there, you'll strap on your snowshoes and set off into the surrounding forest at a comfortable, unhurried pace. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, and the trail winds through birch and pine forest blanketed in winter snow. Bonfire Stop Halfway through, your guide will find a sheltered clearing and light a bonfire. Take off your snowshoes and settle in — this is the moment to breathe, look up at the winter sky, and taste a local snack with something warm to drink. Simple, but one of the highlights of any winter visit to Alta. Good to Know Actual snowshoeing time is approximately 2 hours. Transport from Alta city center to Gargia is 30–45 minutes depending on stops and guest pickups. Wear warm winter clothes and boots. Thermal suits are available if needed.
