The best ways to experience the Northern lights!
Why Alta Is One of the Best Places in the World for Northern Lights
Few natural phenomena capture the imagination quite like the Northern Lights. On clear winter nights in Northern Norway, the sky can suddenly come alive with waves of green, purple, and pink light moving silently above the Arctic landscape.
Alta, located far above the Arctic Circle, has long been known as one of the best places in the world to experience this magical phenomenon. Surrounded by mountains, wide open landscapes, and vast Arctic wilderness, the region offers excellent conditions for witnessing the Aurora Borealis.
At Æventyr, we offer several ways to experience the Northern Lights. Whether you want an adventurous journey across snowy landscapes by snowmobile or a guided small-group hunt searching for the best viewing spots, both tours give you the opportunity to witness one of nature’s most spectacular displays.

Why Alta Is One of the Best Places in the World for Northern Lights
Alta has a unique combination of geography and climate that makes it especially suitable for Northern Lights viewing.
The region has a relatively dry and stable winter climate, which often provides clearer skies than many other Arctic destinations. The surrounding mountains also help create favorable weather conditions, increasing the chances of seeing the lights.
Alta also has a special place in the history of Northern Lights research. In 1899, Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland established one of the world’s first Northern Lights observatories on the nearby mountain Halddetoppen. His groundbreaking research connected the Aurora Borealis to electromagnetic storms from the sun, earning him recognition as the father of modern Northern Lights science.
Long before science explained the phenomenon, the Northern Lights were surrounded by myths and stories. In the Sami language, one of the names for the Aurora is Guovssahas, which means “the light that can be heard,” reflecting the deep cultural connection the Sami people have with the Arctic sky.
Today, visitors from all over the world travel to Alta to experience this breathtaking natural wonder.
Northern Lights by Snowmobile
For those looking for a truly Arctic adventure, exploring the Northern Lights by snowmobile is an unforgettable experience.
This evening safari takes you deep into the winter wilderness of Finnmarksvidda, Europe’s largest mountain plateau. The tour combines the thrill of snowmobiling with the chance to witness the Arctic night sky far away from city lights.
After arriving at Gargia, you will first be provided with warm thermal clothing, boots, and safety equipment for the evening. Your guide will go through the safety instructions and provide a practical demonstration on how to drive the snowmobile.
No previous experience is required. If you have a regular driver’s license, learning to drive a snowmobile is simple and fun.
Guests travel in pairs on each snowmobile, with one driver and one passenger. During the trip there will be opportunities to switch places so both can experience driving.
The journey begins through a snow-covered forest before climbing up towards the Beskades mountain range, the gateway to Finnmarksvidda. Surrounded by wide open landscapes and Arctic silence, the experience itself is as memorable as the destination.
You will spend approximately two hours on the snowmobile, depending on weather and snow conditions.
If the conditions are right, you may see the Northern Lights dancing across the sky above the plateau. Even on nights when the Aurora does not appear, the Arctic night sky offers a spectacular view of stars and the quiet beauty of the winter landscape.
During the trip your guide will also serve warm drinks and snacks, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the surroundings before returning.

Small Group Northern Lights Hunt
For those who prefer a more comfortable and flexible experience, the Small Group Northern Lights Hunt offers a guided journey in search of the Aurora Borealis.
The evening begins at the Æventyr Adventure Store in the center of Alta. Here your guide will start with a short introduction to the Northern Lights, explaining how they form and what conditions are needed to see them.
This presentation helps guests understand the science behind the phenomenon while building anticipation for the evening ahead.
Unlike fixed-location tours, this experience is designed as a Northern Lights hunt. The exact destination depends on the weather conditions and Aurora forecast for that particular evening.
Using local knowledge and weather data, your guide will drive the group to the areas with the best chances of clear skies and visible Northern Lights. Sometimes this means traveling along the coast, while other evenings the best conditions might be found inland.
This flexibility is one of the key advantages of the tour.
Once the group arrives at a suitable viewing location, guests can settle in and enjoy the Arctic night while waiting for the lights to appear. To make the experience even more comfortable, your guide will serve hot tea or coffee together with snacks.
Watching the Northern Lights in the quiet Arctic wilderness is a truly unforgettable moment.
As with all natural phenomena, sightings can never be guaranteed. However, the guides do everything possible to give guests the best chance of witnessing the Aurora while creating a memorable Arctic experience regardless of the conditions.
At the end of the evening, the group returns to the adventure store in Alta where the journey began.
Both tours offer a chance to see the Northern Lights, but they provide very different experiences.
Northern Lights by Snowmobile is perfect for travelers who want an active adventure and the thrill of exploring the Arctic wilderness.
Small Group Northern Lights Hunt is ideal for those who prefer a relaxed experience with a knowledgeable guide who searches for the best conditions.
No matter which tour you choose, you will experience the magic of the Arctic night sky and the unique landscapes that make Alta such a special place.
